U.S. Courts explains that a non-attorney petition preparer may enter information into forms but cannot give legal advice. DDK’s support is limited to clerical preparation from information and directions you supply, where permitted. Choosing a chapter, selecting exemptions, deciding what to file, and assessing the effect on your home require legal advice from an attorney.

Which records can I organize before speaking with a professional?

Keep a list of creditors, balances, assets, income, expenses, recent tax returns, and any collection or court notices available. Include earlier bankruptcy paperwork if applicable. Your attorney or the official court instructions can identify what your case requires. Do not submit Social Security numbers, bank records, or tax documents through the contact form.

Can document preparation stop a foreclosure?

Preparing paperwork is not filing a case and does not stop a sale. Whether bankruptcy is appropriate and how a filing would affect proceedings are legal questions for a bankruptcy attorney. DDK cannot recommend filing, represent you in court, or guarantee acceptance of documents or relief from debt. Contact a qualified attorney promptly if a sale or hearing is scheduled.
